Tribute:  Jaques du Plessis (17 September 1964 – 18 September 2021)
by Kay Montgomery

SANA pays tribute to the significant contribution of Jaques du Plessis to the horticultural industry and to SANA over a period of two decades. Jaques is best remembered as the owner of Erlima Nursery – an ornamental growing operation in the Skeerpoort Valley. Jaques sadly ended his own life on 18 September 2021.

Jaques was an active member of SANA from 1992 to 2011. He held a number of leadership roles in the organisation:

  • 1994-1999 – Vice-chairman of the SANA Growers Sector.
  • 1999-2002 – Chairman of the Ornamental Growers Sector.
  • 2000-2002 – Vice President (Membership) and a member of the SANA Standing Committee representing the Growers Sector.

The Erlima Nursery team exhibited at every SANA Trade Day for two decades and were at the leading edge of shrub and perennial propagation. A background in banking undoubtedly assisted Jaques’ very successful endeavours to import new varieties from The Netherlands and he was a regular visitor at overseas horticultural shows.

During the era 2005-2011, Jaques became a partner in retail nurseries: Super Plants in Cape Town and Camelthorn Nursery in Windhoek, Namibia.

A highly competent businessman and a born leader, Jaques was a popular and regular delegate to the annual SANA Conventions.  Friends remember Jaques’ generosity to colleagues in the industry and his considerable contribution and leadership to local charity projects.

Born in Johannesburg on 17 September 1964, Jaques du Plessis matriculated from Linden High in 1982 and went on to study BCom at Stellenbosch. He later worked for Standard Bank (Treasury Division) and Volkskas Bank (Foreign Exchange). He received his MBA from North West University (Potchefstroom) in 1997. In 1992, he married Lilian Schipper. He leaves two daughters, Bernadine and Michaela.

Sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Kind greetings,
